Frequently Asked Questions

WHERE DOES THE NAME OLLIFF COME FROM?

Olliff is a family name that stems from the designers Norwegian ancestry on her mother's side.  Olliff is the designer's middle name, and her mother's maiden name.

WHAT IS GOLD-FILL?

Gold-filled metal is a tarnish-resistant, more affordable option for wearing gold. Kate & Olliff gold pieces are all made with 14k, double-clad gold-fill metal. Gold-filled metal is made by bonding a thin layer of 14k gold to the top and bottom of a brass core. Gold-fill is a great option for anyone with sensitive ears, or who prefers not having to deal with tarnishing brass.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOLD-FILL AND GOLD-PLATED?

Gold-fill metal contains layers of actual karat gold, while gold-plated contains just a finite film of gold, which tends to wear off over time. Gold-fill is the better option for people with sensitive ears.

WHY IS MY BRASS CHANGING COLOR?

Overtime, brass will tarnish due to a chemical reaction on its outermost layer. Some people like the tarnished look but if you prefer for your brass to be shiny, here's a simple (and natural!) process for cleaning:

  • Mix juice from 1/2 lemon and 1 tsp baking soda or salt. Gently scrub the brass with a soft cloth. Rinse thoroughly with water.

  • Keep your brass pieces in airtight containers to slow tarnishing process
